Wagner Zaun Architecture has named a new addition with the recent hiring of Derek Lehecka, announced Doug Zaun, a partner at the Duluth architectural firm.

 Lehecka, who has lived in the Detroit Metro Area until joining Wagner Zaun Architecture, received his Bachelor of Science of Architecture from Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan. Lehecka worked as a commercial architecture designer for five years upon graduation, and then worked for five years in non-profit community development.  This work involved providing case management and support services to low-income and homeless individuals in Detroit.  The experience further reinforced Derek’s conviction that “safe, affordable, high quality, and energy efficient housing is a right to all persons,” therefore he is glad to have the opportunity to work for Wagner Zaun where he can further his knowledge on how to make that a reality for others.  Much of Derek’s time will be devoted to the Hillside Apartments project, which will create 44 units of permanent supportive housing for families and six units of emergency shelter for homeless families.

Qualifications:

• High school or Post-secondary education in design, drafting, building science, or engineering.
• Minimum 5 years relevant work experience, including work in both remodeling and new construction (residential and light commercial).
• Proficiency in AutoCad R2004 or higher (two dimensional drafting).
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Good working knowledge of construction materials, methods, and assemblies.
• Understanding /awareness of building science and energy efficient construction techniques.
• Ability to review a set of plans and determine where building assemblies need to be illustrated and detailed to accurately convey the construction intent.
• Good graphic sensibility in order to arrange, draw, scale, and represent plans and details in a legible, useful, and tidy manner.

 Responsibilities include:

• Production of design development and construction documents.
• Document coordination with project specifications
• Research into products/materials, code/zoning, and other building-related topics.

Doug recently attended an open house for the many people involved in the project and came back with some great photos. Finishing touches remain on the interior and the exterior patio and bread oven

We took an office field trip to the almost completed Canal Park Brewing Company.  It is still a little bit construction site/a little bit brewery, but the balance is tipping…  should be brewing soon, and opening soon after that.
