Ecologists’ House

Duluth, MN
Two ecologists and their daughter will live in this house adjacent a marshy area on an 80 acre former homestead and pine plantation. Every aspect of the project was informed by the Owners’ desire to live lightly and in harmony with this site. The house sits along the edge of the marsh with living spaces designed to take advantage of views and breezes along the northwest and northeast. The two-story, two bedroom home (with an office and two alcoves that can serve as additional sleeping areas) is a simple form evocative of a practical farm house. The super-insulated structure will benefit from passive solar gain largely collected in the attached greenhouse and space heat will be primarily provided by the wood stove set on a hearth in the north-facing living area . Open, inter-connected interior spaces, a polished concrete floor and simple wood details give a modern feel to this otherwise rustic setting. A wrapping verandah with a screened porch and roof deck connect the enclosed living spaces to the outdoors with multi-use space perfect for this outdoor-oriented family.
