Garden Lake Deep Energy Retrofit

Additions & Remodels / Low Energy / 2010
Ely, MN

The owner asked us to help make her c. 1970 home more livable, comfortable, durable, and energy efficient. The solutions were dramatic for this 3-bedroom, 2 bath one-story home with a walk-out basement. The result is a warmer, brighter, healthier home that costs much less to heat and is less prone to water damage. The project included a remodel of the interior and the addition of a screened porch; a new roof, siding, windows and decks; and an extensive energy retrofit strategy to increase overall thermal performance (insulation, air sealing, and mechanical ventilation) and improve indoor air quality. This deep energy retrofit is expected to reduce energy needed for space heating by 2/3 and total household energy use by more than half.
