Finland, MN | Low Energy | Commercial

This project reflects the resourcefulness and spirit of the community it serves.

The 10,000 square foot plan includes an exhibit area, 2 meeting rooms, a commercial kitchen, and a large multi-purpose gathering space with a stage. The local project committee asked for a simple, durable and energy-efficient building that would take advantage of a south-facing building site. Detailed energy modeling led to an ideal and cost-efficient balance of passive solar design, a super-insulated building envelope, and mechanical systems design. The result is a building designed to use less than half the energy required for operation if the building had been constructed to code and common practice. Regional tradition and local talent allowed for the design and construction of timber frame elements to define entry and outdoor space.
